Sanford Elliott Schen (Sandy) (AH) March 31, 1941 – July 25, 2021
Early on the morning of July 25, 2021, Dr Sanford Elliott Schen passed away peacefully while being visited and comforted by those he loved and those who loved him most. Sanford was born on March 31, 1941 in the city of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Graduating Forester Collegiate high school in 1959, he went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Western Ontario’s Schulich School of Medicine in 1966, followed by a Cardiology fellowship at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic. In 1972, upon accepting a position at Welborn Hospital, he moved to Evansville, IN with his devoted and loving wife Jacquie to raise a family and begin what would be a fulfilling medical career culminating in his opening of Ohio Valley Heart Care. Sanford loved music, was an avid piano and guitar player, contributing his talents as a member of several bands from his youth to retirement. He also loved flying, as a private pilot, was a car enthusiast, golfing with the boys, and was an all-around “Renaissance man”. Sanford is survived by his wife, Jacquie (nee Eid) Schen, with which he would have celebrated a 50th wedding anniversary on September 5, 2021. His four children Alli (nee Schen) Alix (Michael Locicero), Stephanie Schen, MD (Ryan Schroeder, MD), Aaron (Van) Schen, Samuel Schen (Sarah Purcell) and his seven grandchildren – Liadan (11), Emiliana (9), Alex (9), Teagan (8), Brooke (6), Lilly (4), and Anders (1); a brother – Gerry (Irene) Schen; and many loved nieces and nephews residing in Canada. Sanford was a prolific philanthropist and in lieu of flowers would have greatly appreciated donations to some of his favorite charities to ensure that patients and their families receive the treatment and support they need, including St Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org), Riley Children’s Hospital (rileychildrens.org), the American Heart Association(heart.org), and local Chemo Buddies (chemobuddies.org).
